We currently have an opportunity for an experienced RF engineer to join the Electron Cyclotron and RF Heating and Current Drive group to coordinate the commissioning, operation, and future upgrades of new cutting edge RF heating systems (currently in design and fabrication) in support of the DIII-D (National Fusion Facility) program in San Diego, CA.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • This position will be responsible for coordinating the engineering activities involved with the commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance and operation of the overall RF system, comprising the following subsystems:
  • High-voltage power supply with its controls/interlocks and connections to the site prime power
  • Klystron and its support systems: water cooling, air cooling, power supply connections and its associated circulator
  • Control systems and low-level RF drive for the klystron, interface with the DIII-D timing and PCS systems, and associated (hardware) safety interlocks
  • Transmission line system including circulators RF Switches and dummy loads
  • RF diagnostics, arc detection, and data acquisition systems, which all must be tested and calibrated
  • Six-inch transmission lines with DC breaks and other transmission line components
  • Connections to comb-line antenna mounted in DIII-D, including feedthroughs on port, striplines for RF transmission and associated optical arc protection systems
  • Work with control, instrumentation, vacuum, HV and other staff engineers to optimize system performance and respond to on-going requests from research staff.
  • Participate in vacuum conditioning and routine operation of the RF system.
  • Work with research staff to understand interaction of RF components on the performance of the overall system.
This position exercises considerable latitude for initiating procedures, techniques and solutions to resolving issues that may develop during the commissioning and initial system operation. In addition to the specific duties outlined above the candidate should have a good grasp of the following activities:
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs systems in assigned area by utilizing standard engineering practices.
  • Obtains and analyzes test data to improve the understanding of system function and troubleshooting.
  • Develops appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions, and makes technical presentations as required.
  • Responsible for resource planning, scheduling & budgeting for operations, maintenance, refurbishments & upgrades of responsible systems.
  • Responsible for personnel safety of their own working group as well as others having contact with their equipment.
  • Utilizes a standard set of electrical engineering skills to lead projects, and provides overall guidance to the development of new systems.
  • Flexibility in work hours is necessary to cover extended operation days and when emergency repairs are needed to recover from a system failure.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in Engineering or related technical field and progressively complex engineering experience as follows; nine or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, seven or more years experience with a Masters degree, and four or more with a PhD. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrates an extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective interface with other departments and/or professionals, and capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact, as well as providing leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment. Able to work extended hours as required. A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, and invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium are desirable.
Desirable Experience:
  • High power (100kW-1MW) Klystron operations and associated support systems.
  • Working with High Voltage > 1kV and High Power > 200kW systems.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW, PLC programming, and computer hardware and networking is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading groups or teams.
